How to Market and Sell a Main Product + Add-ons (A.K.A. The Membership Approach)

If you run a brick-and-mortar studio or club, or any kind of fitness business that has a membership component, you can use Main Products to sell and manage your memberships and access to the app and use Add-ons to offer your members additional services that enhance or complement their base membership.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Turn on Membership Control

Before you start building any of your products, you’ll need to decide if you want to use Membership Control. In this case, because you want to make sure that all your clients purchase a membership, you’ll want to flip it to “On”.

Remember that when Membership Control is on, clients must have an active Main Product before they can purchase any Add-ons.

Step 2: Build a Main Product for your club or studio membership

Since club memberships are your business's bread and butter, you’ll want to sell that as a Main Product.

Follow these details as a guide for setting up your club membership Main Product:

Payment type: Recurring

Pricing: $69
*The price you charge is completely up to you and will depend on what your membership includes.

Frequency: every 1 month

Product duration: Renews until cancelled

Product starts on: Day of purchase

Sell on Trainerize.me: ON

Allow self-cancellation OFF
*To ensure that your clients can only access their add-ons while their membership (main product) is active, you’ll need to keep self-cancellation turned off. In general, whenever you’re selling recurring Main Products we recommend that you keep self-cancellation turned off so that, if a member is thinking of cancelling their services you can connect with them first and ensure that you can best support them at that time.

Step 3: Build Add-ons to complement your club or studio membership

Now that you’ve got your Main Product created, it’s time to build some Add-ons to complement it!

A great place to start is with your standard coaching services, such as:

  • 1-on-1 personal training
  • Nutrition coaching and/or meal plans
  • Habit and/or lifestyle coaching

The process is almost exactly the same as building a Main Product, but make sure to choose "Add-On" as the product type. Once saved, you won't be able to change your selection.

You can follow these
details as a guide for setting up an Add-on:

Type: Add-on

Payment type: Recurring

Pricing: $79
*The price you charge is completely up to you and will depend on what your membership includes.

Frequency: every 1 month

Product duration: Renews until cancelled

Product starts on: Day of purchase

Sell on Trainerize.me: ON

Allow self-cancellation OFF
*This is up to you. In most situations, we recommend keeping this turned off. This will ensure that clients come to you directly when they want to cancel a service.

After you’ve covered your more standard services, you can get creative and create an even wider range of Add-ons for your members to choose from.

Step 4: Market and promote your products

With your Main Product set up and your Add-ons built, it's time to start marketing and selling your products to members!

Because you've already listed the products on your Trainerize.me profile, you're already well on your way.

Here are a few other things you can do to get the word out about your services:
