In this article, we will cover everything you need to know to get started with the AI Workout Builder.
Note: The AI Workout Builder is currently in open beta and our team is actively improving the feature based on feedback.
What is the AI Workout Builder?
The AI Workout Builder is a built-in AI tool that turns your written instructions into fully structured workouts. This feature is designed to reduce workout setup time, and help you move from idea to finished workout faster while maintaining full control over the final result.
When you enter a prompt, the AI generates a workout that includes:
- Exercise selection
- Workout structure and formatting
- Sets, reps, and rest periods
- Supersets or circuits (when applicable)
After you confirm the draft, the workout is created and behaves like any other workouts you use on ABC Trainerize. You can open the workout in the Workout Builder to review, edit, and assign the workout as needed.
Who Can Access the AI Workout Builder?
The feature available to all trainers on a paid ABC Trainerize account, including Account Owners, Admins, Managers, Shared Trainers and Regular Trainers. Access to this feature cannot be restricted by permission settings.
The AI Workout Builder is also not available on 30-Day trial or free accounts. The feature is available paid subscription plans (Grow and above).
What the AI Workout Builder Can and Cannot Do
What It Can Do:
- Create a workout in Master Programs or Master Workout folders
- Generate personalized workouts inside a client's program using available client data
- Adapt workouts based on client goals, experience levels and restrictions
- Create a single workout per conversation
What It Cannot Do:
- Edit a workout through the chat after it has been confirmed and created
- Save conversation history (once the AI Workout Builder chat is exited, the conversation and any unconfirmed workout drafts are lost)
- Create programs or training phases
- Assign workouts to clients automatically
- Move workouts between folders or programs
- Create habits, challenges, nutrition goals, etc.
- Be used for basic clients.
- Create exercises that don't exist within your Master Exercise Library.
Where to Access the AI Workout Builder
The AI Workout Builder can be accessed from several locations on your ABC Trainerize web account, allowing you to generate a workout wherever it fits best in your workflow.
Note: Where you launch the AI Workout builder on your account determines where the workout will be saved.
1. Top Navigation Bar
Access via:
- Top navigation bar on all pages
Workouts saved to:
- Account Owners and Admins: Shared Master Workout Folder
- Managers, Shared Trainers, and Regular Trainers: Personal Master Workout Folder
2. Master Workout Library
Access via:
- Master Libraries > Workouts
Workouts saved to:
- Account Owners and Admins: Shared or Personal Master Workout Folder (depending on access point)
- Managers, Shared Trainers, and Regular Trainers: Personal Master Workout Folder
3. Master Program Training Phases
Access via:
- Master Programs > Training Phase
Workouts saved:
- Directly within that Master Program training phase
4. Clients Program
Access via:
- Clients program or top navigation bar on client profile
Workouts saved:
- Directly to the clients program rather than in your Master Workout Library.
To help avoid confusion, the AI chat window will display a location indicator bubble. This bubble shows exactly where that workout will be created and saved. Hovering over the bubble will show additional details about the location. Always ensure to review this location before confirming and creating a workout:
How to Use the AI Workout Builder
To create a workout using the AI Workout Builder:
1. Open the AI Workout Builder from the top navigation bar, Master Workout Library, or a program training phase.
2. Select a prompt from the ABC Trainerize Prompt Library or write your own custom prompt.
- More detailed prompts produce more accurate and relevant workouts.
- For best practices on writing your own prompt, see Prompt Best Practices.
3. After submitting your prompt, the AI will generate a workout DRAFT.
- While the workout is still in DRAFT mode, you can continue the conversation with the AI to refine the workout.
- You can ask it to adjust exercises, change volume, modify rest times, or tweak the overall structure.
- The AI will regenerate a workout draft based on your feedback.
4. Once you're satisfied with the workout DRAFT, confirm the workout.
- You can say things like "This looks great", "Yes, create the workout" or equivalent.
5. A Workout Preview tile will appear and the workout is now created.
- Once the Workout Preview tile appears, the workout can no longer be edited through the AI conversation.
- To make changes, you will need to open the workout in the Workout builder and edit it manually.
Building an AI Workout Inside a Client's Program
The AI Workout Builder can also be used to create workouts directly inside a client's program. This is available for all active coaching clients (including Full Access 2-way, Full Access 1-way, and Offline clients). The AI Workout Builder is not available for Basic clients.
Generating a Workout from a Client Profile
When launched from a client's profile, a workout will be saved directly into that client's program, rather than your Master Program Workout Library.
The AI chat window displays a location bubble indicating:
- Which client the workout belongs to
- Which program and training phase it will be added to
- Where the workout will be created
Client Context Used for Workout Generation
When accessed from a client's profile, the AI will automatically be provided with limited client context to improve workout generation accuracy.
The following client attributes are used as contextual inputs:
- Age
- Sex
- Height
- Weight (most recently tracked weight within the last 3 months)
- 10 past workouts (tracked within the last 3 months)
- 10 past cardio activities (tracked within the last 3 months)
This information is used only as contextual input to support workout creation. It helps the AI generate more relevant, personalized programming.
Training Phase Requirements
You must create a program or training phase before generating an AI workout in a clients profile. If the client does not have an active program or training phase:
- You must create one before generating a workout using the AI Workout Builder
- The location bubble will indicate there is "No Program/Phase". Clicking this message will allow you to add a new training phase directly to the client's program.
How to Use the Trainerize Prompt Library
The Trainerize Prompt Library provides pre-written prompts to help you get started with the AI Workout builder quickly.
You can:
- Select a prompt and use it as-is
- Customize a prompt before generating a workout
- Use prompts in the library as inspiration for creating your own.
You can Copy the prompt text to your text box to adjust it further, or click Use This Prompt to insert the prompt directly into the AI Builder chat text box.
Prompt Best Practices
The quality of the generated workout depends heavily on the quality of the prompt provided. Below are a few key best practices to consider when using your own custom prompt:
Be As Detailed As Possible:
- The AI relies entirely on the information you provide. If key details are missing, it may ask follow-up questions before generating a workout draft.
Recommended Client Information:
- Age
- Sex
- Height and/or Weight
- Fitness Level (beginner, intermediate, advanced)
- Primary Goals (fat loss, muscle gain, strength, endurance, etc.)
- Injuries or movement restrictions
- Equipment availability and Space Limitations
- Personal Preferences (e.g., no running, longer rest periods)
Recommended Workout Details:
- Focus area (e.g., upper body, lower body, cardio, back)
- Workout type (regular, circuit, interval). If not specific, the AI will choose what it considers the best format.
- Supersets or circuits (and number of rounds)
- Rest times (between sets, exercises, or rounds)
- Target workout duration
- Specific muscles or movement patterns to emphasize
Frequently Asked Questions
Why aren't my custom exercises appearing in AI-generated workouts?
The AI Workout Builder selects exercises based on how closely they match keywords and intent of your prompt. This includes exercise names and any associated exercise tags.
You cannot explicitly instruct the AI to use your custom exercises only. To increase the likelihood that your custom exercises are selected, ensure they are clearly named and apply accurate and detailed exercise tags.
Using clear, accurate exercise tags- such as muscle groups, equipment type, and difficulty level- helps the AI better match your custom exercises to relevant prompts.
For more information on custom exercise tagging, visit: [insert link].
Is there a cost to using the AI Workout Builder?
No. The AI Workout Builder is included in all paid plans at no additional cost. All coaches on an active paid plan automatically have access.
Can I create multiple workouts in one conversation?
Not currently. The AI Workout builder supports one workout per conversation. If you attempt to generate multiple workouts in the same thread, the AI will notify you that this action is not supported.
Why can't I view conversation history?
Conversation history is not currently saved. If you exit the AI Workout Builder chat, the conversation and any unconfirmed workout drafts are permanently lost. If you need to reference the conversation, keep the tab open until the workout has been reviewed and created.
I'm seeing an error message. What does it mean?
If the AI displays a message indicating something is not possible (for example, attempting to create multiple workouts in one conversation), it means you are attempting an action that is currently not supported.
These guardrails are in place to ensure workout accuracy and system stability. Please refer to What the AI Workout Builder Can and Cannot Do.
Does my client data train the algorithm?
No. Client data used during workout generation is only used as contextual input to generate that specific workout. It is not used to train or improve the AI model.
How do I provide feedback for the AI workout builder?
Because the AI Workout Builder is currently in open beta, your feedback plays a critical role in shaping future improvements.
Feedback can be submitted directly within the AI chat using the thumbs up or thumbs down icons, which are always visible in your conversations:
Sharing feedback helps improve workout quality, exercise selection, and overall AI performance over time. We encourage trainers to provide feedback whenever a generated workout is helpful or does not meet expectations.
