In this article, we will cover everything you need to know to get started with the AI Workout Builder.
Note: The AI Workout Builder is currently in open beta and our team is actively improving the feature based on feedback.
What is the AI Workout Builder?
The AI Workout Builder is a built-in AI tool that turns your written instructions into structured workouts. This feature is designed to reduce workout setup time and help you move from idea to finished workout faster while maintaining full control over the final result.
When you enter a prompt, the AI can generate:
- Exercise selection
- Workout structure and formatting
- Sets, reps, and rest periods
- Supersets or circuits (when applicable)
- Workout duration that matches the created workout
After you confirm the draft, the workout is created and behaves like any other workouts you use on ABC Trainerize. You can open the workout in the Workout Builder to review, edit, and assign the workout as needed.
Who Can Access the AI Workout Builder?
The feature available to all trainers on a paid ABC Trainerize account, including Account Owners, Admins, Managers, Shared Trainers and Regular Trainers. Access to this feature cannot be restricted by permission settings.
The AI Workout Builder is not available on 30-Day trial or free accounts. The feature is available paid subscription plans (Grow and above).

Where to Access the AI Workout Builder
The AI Workout Builder is available anywhere you can create a workout, including:
- Master Workout Library
- Master Program Training Phase
- Client Program
To open the AI Workout Builder:
Open the location where you want to create the workout from.
-
Select the yellow New button.
Choose Build with AI Workout Builder.
The location where you open the builder determines where the workout will be created and saved. The AI Workout Builder displays a location indicator in the chat so you can confirm the destination before creating the workout.
How to Use the AI Workout Builder
To create a workout using the AI Workout Builder:
- Open the location where you want to create the workout.
- Select New > Build with AI Workout Builder.
- Select a prompt from the ABC Trainerize Prompt Library or write your own custom prompt.
- More detailed prompts produce more accurate and relevant workouts.
- For best practices on writing your own prompt, see Prompt Best Practices.
4. Review the generated workout draft in the workout preview.
- The preview shows the workout structure, exercises, sets, and other workout details in a scannable format.
- The chat remains available beside the preview so you can continue refining the draft.
- Use the divider between the chat and preview to adjust the layout.
5. Ask the AI to make changes while the workout is still a draft. For example, you can ask it to:
- Replace or adjust exercises
- Change the number of sets or reps
- Modify rest periods
- Change the workout structure
- Adjust the workout duration
6. When you are satisfied with the draft, confirm the workout by selecting Yes! Create This Workout.
5. A Workout Preview tile will appear and the workout is now created.
- Once the Workout Preview tile appears, the workout can no longer be edited through the AI conversation.
- To make changes, you will need to select the Edit button to make any additional manual edits as needed.
After the workout is saved, you can ask the AI Workout Builder to create another workout in the same chat session. Each workout must be generated, reviewed, confirmed, and saved separately. The builder does not create multiple workouts at the same time.
How to Upload a File to the AI Workout Builder
You can upload an existing file to help the AI Workout Builder create a workout. This can help you convert a workout from another source without manually recreating every exercise.
Your file must meet the following requirements:
- Supported file types: CSV, Excel (.xlsx), or PDF
- The file includes exercise names and, optionally, sets, reps, rest periods, or other workout details
- The file contains one workout
- Maximum file size: 1 MB
Tip: You can create multiple workouts during the same AI Workout Builder session, but each workout must be uploaded and created individually.
How to Upload a File:
- Open the AI Workout Builder via the New button in the location you want to create the workout.
- In the chat input area, select the Plus (+) icon and choose Attach PDF, CSV or Excel.
- Browse for and select the file you want to upload.
- The AI Workout Builder will analyze the file and generate a workout draft.
- Review the generated workout carefully and compare it against the original file. If needed, ask the AI to make adjustments or corrections.
- When you are satisfied with the workout, confirm the draft by selecting "Yes! Create this Workout".
Once confirmed, the workout is created and can be edited, assigned, or added to programs like any other workout in ABC Trainerize.
Building an AI Workout Inside a Client's Program
You can use the AI Workout Builder to create a workout directly inside an active coaching client's program. This includes Full Access 2-way, Full Access 1-way, and Offline clients. The AI Workout Builder is not available for Basic clients.
Training Phase Requirements:
You must have a program and training phase available before creating an AI workout in a client's program.
If the client does not have an active program or training phase:
- Create the required program or training phase before generating the workout.
- Review the location indicator to confirm where the workout will be added.
Client Context Used for Workout Generation
When you launch the AI Workout Builder from a client's profile or program, the AI receives limited client context to help generate a more relevant workout.
The available context includes:
- Age
- Sex
- Height
- Weight, based on the most recently tracked weight within the last three months
- Up to 10 past workouts tracked within the last three months
- Up to 10 past cardio activities tracked within the last three months
This information is used only as contextual input to support workout creation. It helps the AI generate more relevant, personalized programming.
How to Use the Prompt Library
The ABC Trainerize Prompt Library provides pre-written prompts to help you get started with the AI Workout builder quickly.
You can:
- Select a prompt and use it as-is
- Customize a prompt before generating a workout
- Use prompts in the library as inspiration for creating your own.
Select Copy the add the prompt text to the chat input and edit it, or select Use This Prompt to insert the prompt directly into the AI Builder chat text box.
Prompt Best Practices
The quality of the generated workout depends on the information included in your prompt. If important details are missing, the AI may ask follow-up questions before generating a draft.
Include Client Information:
Where relevant, include:
- Age
- Sex
- Height and/or Weight
- Fitness Level (beginner, intermediate, advanced)
- Primary Goals (fat loss, muscle gain, strength, endurance, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create multiple workouts in one conversation?
Yes. You can create and save multiple workouts during the same AI Workout Builder session. However, each workout must be created separately. Generate and save one workout before asking the AI to create the next one. The AI Workout Builder cannot create multiple workouts at the same time.
Can I edit a workout through the chat after it's created?
No. After the workout has been confirmed and created, the AI chat can no longer edit that workout. Open the workout in the Workout Builder to make manual changes.
How do I get my custom exercises to appear in AI-generated workouts?
The AI Workout Builder selects exercises based on how closely they match the keywords and intent of your prompt. This includes exercise names and associated exercise tags.
You cannot instruct the AI to use only custom exercises. To increase the likelihood that a custom exercise is selected, use a clear name and apply accurate, detailed exercise tags, such as muscle group, equipment type, and difficulty level.
For more information, see: How to Use Exercise Tags Effectively
Is there a cost to using the AI workout builder?
No. The AI Workout Builder is included in all paid plans at no additional cost. All coaches on an active paid plan automatically have access.
Why can't I view my conversation history?
Conversation history is not currently saved. If you exit the AI Workout Builder chat, the conversation and any unconfirmed workout drafts are permanently lost. If you need to reference the conversation, keep the tab open until the workout has been reviewed and created.
I'm seeing an error message. What does it mean?
If the AI displays a message indicating something is not possible (for example, attempting to create multiple workouts in one conversation), it means you are attempting an action that is currently not supported.
These guardrails are in place to ensure workout accuracy and system stability. Please refer to What the AI Workout Builder Can and Cannot Do.
Does my client data train the algorithm?
No. Client data used during workout generation is only used as contextual input to generate that specific workout. It is not used to train or improve the AI model.
How do I provide feedback for the AI workout builder?
Because the AI Workout Builder is currently in open beta, your feedback plays a critical role in shaping future improvements. Feedback can be submitted directly within the AI chat using the thumbs up or thumbs down icons, which are always visible in your conversations:
Sharing feedback helps improve workout quality, exercise selection, and overall AI performance over time. We encourage trainers to provide feedback whenever a generated workout is helpful or does not meet expectations.
What data does the AI workout builder have access to?
When launched from a client's profile or program, the AI Workout Builder uses only the limited client context described in Client Context Used for Workout Generation.
It does not have access to other identifiable sensitive client or account data.
